Call for proposals

It is my pleasure to invite proposals for the 2012 annual meeting of the Canadian Philosophy of Education Society (CPES), to be held as part of CSSE and the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, May 26-30 at Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo. The pre-conference will be held on May 26th and the main conference will be held from May 27-30th.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, November 15th.

The 2012 conference theme is Crossroads: Scholarship for an Uncertain World, certainly a relevant and timely topic. However, proposals unrelated to the conference theme are also welcome. Common formats for CPES sessions have been single- and multi-authored papers and topical symposia, but if you would like to propose an alternative format, such as a book launch or a working session for instructors of philosophy of education courses, please don't hesitate to contact me.

In asking urgent and original questions, philosophy of education in Canada continues to be vibrant, rigorous, and innovative. There is much that philosophy of education can offer both philosophy and education through substantial examinations of current and recurring issues. CPES welcomes contributions from a variety of philosophical approaches. While there will be room for conceptual analysis, ethical inquiry, epistemological concerns, and contributions addressing critically oriented work, we recognize the increasing interdisciplinarity of academic work. Philosophical methods and sources are used in, and in conjunction with, cultural studies, women's studies, political theory, postcolonial critique, and more. We look forward to interdisciplinary submissions that include philosophical methods or sources and that address educational questions and issues.

CPES also welcomes graduate students to submit their work to the conference. CPES is an ideal place for students to make professional connections and to receive friendly, constructive criticism on their work, and CPES members are reminded to encourage any students who may be working on thesis projects to submit to CPES or to the CSSE graduate students' round table sessions.
All proposals must be submitted through the central CSSE on-line submission system at http://www.csse-scee.ca/conference/ Please see the right side bar for links to the official call for proposals and submission instructions. Since CPES is a special interest group of the Canadian Association for Foundations of Education (CAFE), please clearly mark your submission "CPES," and make sure you tick "CPES" in the on-line membership and submission process. (Otherwise, the submission will be sent to CAFE.) If you also email me (trevor.norris@utoronto.ca) when you have submitted your CPES proposal, I can make sure no proposal is missed. Please note that all authors of accepted presentations must be CSSE members in good standing for the year of the conference. For more information please visit their website at http://www.csse-scee.ca/conference/

In accordance with a decision taken at the 2011 annual meeting, all CPES proposals will now undergo blind peer review. Please note that proposals that deviate substantially from the length and format described in the CSSE Call for Proposals will be considered only if program space remains after all other proposals have been accommodated. It is important to observe these guidelines in order to ensure your proposal is eligible for consideration.

Since our membership base determines the number of program sessions we are allotted, please be sure to renew your CPES membership!

I look forward to meeting many new CPES members, and to welcoming you all to Waterloo next spring!
