"The role of philosophy in teacher education: Initial reflections on a textbook project"

Abstract: There are many potentially valid ways for philosophy to be integrated into teacher education. In our "non-ideal" Canadian reality, philosophers of education often only get one dedicated course with student-teachers, if any. Or we try to sneak philosophy into some other class we end up teaching. What should we put in that course, if we have the liberty to choose? One could move chronologically from Plato onwards, to Dewey and beyond. One could select a series of ‘isms’ or contemporary issues and build the course around these. Based on my experiences training teachers over the past several years and my research in this area, I am currently developing a textbook that adopts what I will broadly call a "capacity-building" and "practice-sensitive" approach to integrating philosophy into teacher education. My presentation will provide an overview of the textbook’s structure and content as it currently stands, making explicit the logic involved and contrasting my approach with others. Given the work-in-progress nature of the textbook, I want to give ample time for discussion with the respondent and the audience.
